ABS-CBN TIES UP WITH ALA GYM

By Ronnie Nathanielsz

Capitalizing on its successful coverage of major boxing events both national and international, the giant broadcast network ABS-CBN has taken its interest in boxing one step further by entering into a long-term partnership with the famed ALA Gym of boxing patron Tony Aldeguer.

Youthful Michael Aldeguer who has assumed the mantle of his father, Tony, in handling the affairs of the ALA Gym has disclosed that the tie-up involved local and regional boxing events in the Philippines including the second season of the successful television reality show, “Idol.”

Aldeguer met recently with ABS-CBN Vice-President for Sports, Peter Musngi and discussed the alliance which is aimed at making the Philippines the center of boxing at least in Asia.

As a result of the agreement, Aldeguer and Musngi have agreed to arrange five fights for reigning WBO Asia Pacific super flyweight champion and a genuine prospect AJ “Bazooka” Banal and current WBO Intercontinental super bantamweight champion Rey “Boom Boom” Bautista as well as other promising fighters from the ALA Gym.

ABS-CBN and Golden Boy Promotions are also working together to promote the WBC bantamweight title defense of Gerry Penalosa against mandatory challenger Ratanachai Sor Vorapin at the Araneta Coliseum on April 6 with Banal and Bautista both featured on the undercard.

The network has also worked out a deal with Top Rank Promotions to telecast the much-awaited rematch between Filipino ring idol Manny Pacquiao and WBC super featherweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez on March 15 in Las Vegas, on its widely distributed TFC or The Filipino Channel in the Middle-East. The network will also telecast the next two fights of the popular Oscar De La Hoya as well as future world title fights from Top Rank. Source:philboxing.com
