Pacquiao win not sure, says Arum

Not even Bob Arum, the great promoter, is certain of a Manny Pacquiao victory over Juan Manuel Marquez on March 15in Las Vegas.

There’s only one thing certain about the coming fight, he said, and that it’s going to be interesting.

“Do I say Manny is going to win with any certainty? Of course not and that’s what makes this an interesting fight. But I’m hopeful that he does win,” he told boxingtalk.com.

“I like Manny’s chances, but as you said he’s in a very tough fight with Marquez. I’m hopeful about the result.”

Arum said should Pacquiao win, the Filipino superstar will be back on the ring on June 21 in Macau, against reigning WBC lightweight champion David Diaz.

But that’s if Diaz, another Top Rank entry, beats Ramon Montano in the undercard of the Pacquiao-Marquez fight. Montano is the same Mexican who sparred with Pacquiao last week at Wild Card.

“We’re expecting a good win from David. If he wins and Pacquiao wins we’re looking to do a huge event on June 21 on a PPV (pay-per-view) show from Macau and Pacquiao will fight for the lightweight title,” Arum said.

Arum was in New York when he shared his views with the popular boxing website. But he said he was on his way to San Francisco to hook up with his prized fighter.

Pacquiao is scheduled to hold a media workout on Wednesday (Thursday in Manila) at the Titanium Training Center in San Francisco.

The event, which is open to the public, is aimed at further drumming up the big rematch set at Mandalay Bay, even if there’s really no more need to hype it.

“The buzz on that fight is enormous. The thing is heading for a sell-out. There’s a frenzy in buying tickets, particularly among Filipinos and Mexicans,” said Arum.
