Welcoat shops for imports
Welcoat Paints hopes to cash in on a privilege given to a tail-ender of the on-going season as the Dragons hinted of acquiring two dependable imports for the coming PBA Fiesta Cup.
According to co-team owner Raymund Yu, they are searching for two reinforcements, one of them a 6-foot-1 guard who can play the point which the Dragons lacked in their first three conferences.
They are also targetting a 6-foot-8 import who can plug the hole in the middle..
"We’re still looking," Yu said indicating that no candidate has so far surfaced.. "We’re still in the process of gathering information.".
Coach Leo Austria is the one in charge of looking for the imports, whom Yu and co-owner Terry Que hope can fit the team’s system and at the same time blend with the locals led by last year’s top pick Joe De Vance, Jay-Arr Reyes and Nic Belasco..
Welcoat and Coca-Cola earned the incentive of using two imports – one who stands not taller than 6-foot-1 and the other with unlimited height – for finishing10th and 9th, respectively, during the eliminations of the Philippine Cup..
The Fiesta Cup is set Mar. 30..
During their first year in the league last season, the Dragons started with guard Alex Compton and center Charles Clark III in the Fiesta Cup..
But Clark got injured (strained knee) after seven games and was replaced by Rob Sanders. Welcoat’s woes did not end there as Sanders played only three games. He was replaced by Wayland White, who started in eight games..
But even with White and Compton’s brilliant plays, Welcoat still finished last with a 4-15 win-loss record..
"We’re hoping to acquire a taller guard who can play the point and can be an effective two-guard as well. It depends on the negotiations.".
Que hinted that they might recruit an NCAA veteran, one who can shoot from afar..
"Sabi magaling na shooter daw yong kinukuha namin, let’s just wait," said Que..
As for Coca-Cola, mentor Binky Favis said that they’re still in the process of acquiring their imports..
The Tigers are hoping to improve on their quarterfinal finish in the Philippine Cup..
Defending champion Alaska and other teams — Talk ‘N Text, Magnolia Beverage, Barangay Ginebra, Air21, Purefoods TJ Hotdogs, Red Bull and Sta. Lucia Realty — are allowed to have only one import with unlimited height..
The Aces defeated the Phone Pals in a classic seven-game series for the 2007 Fiesta Cup title..
Meanwhile, rumors spread yesterday prior to Game 3 of the Philippine Cup Finals between Purefoods and Sta. Lucia that the Realtors’ forward Kelly Williams will be named the Best Player of the Conference..
Williams is second in the Statistical Points average with 36.8..
Leading the statistics is Air21’s Arwind Santos (37.1), third is Asi Taulava (36.7), followed by reigning MVP Willie Miller of Alaska (36.2) and Kerby Raymundo of Purefoods (32.9)..
The winner will be announced in Game 4..
