Barrios to push 3-tourney format
PBA Commissioner Sonny Barrios yesterday said he would propose the return of the three-conference format during the regular PBA board meeting set today at the PBA office.
"If there’s still time, I will present it to the board," Barrios said.
Without elaborating, Barrios said the old format is favorable to league followers looking for more matches.
The adoption of the two-conference format during the term of former PBA Commissioner Noli Eala has reduced the number of matches, thereby affecting the league’s income and the fans’ craving for more games.
The current format was brought about by the PBA’s commitment to represent the country in international competitions.
Barrios, however, believes that the PBA’s commitment won’t be affected with the return of the old practice.
For 29 seasons, the league was played under the three-conference format.
In 1975 and 1976, the three conferences were known as First, Second and Third, the last two with imports. Then it was changed to All-Filipino, Open and Invitational from 1977 to 1980.
In 1981, the league only had two conferences, Open and Reinforced Filipino. From 1982, the three conferences returned, and from 1993, the conferences were named All-Filipino Cup, Governors Cup and Commissioner’s Cup.
That changed during the 2004 Eala pushed for the two-conference format.
Only two teams – Crispa in 1976 and 1983 and San Miguel Beer in 1989 – have won the rare grand slam, winning all three conferences in a single season.
One downside with the return to the old format is that teams will have to shell out more for players’ bonuses, observers noted.
