Davao's Gabi unfazed of Mexican opponent
ASIDE from Manny Pacquiao, two other Filipino boxers will climb the ring to fight separate opponents on March 15 (March in Manila) in Las Vegas.
Diodado "Prince" Gabi of Davao City and Ernel Fontanilla will be in the undercard of the Manny Pacquiao-Juan Manuel Marquez showdown for the World Boxing Council (WBC) super featherweight crown dubbed "Unfinished Business."
Incidentally, the 28-year-old Gabi, who hails from Lasang, will be fighting on the day of the founding anniversary of Davao City.
March 16 is the 71st Araw ng Dabaw celebration and Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte does not want to spoil the excitement among Filipino boxing fans.
City Hall will put up wide screens at Rizal Park to allow Dabawenyos to watch Pacquiao's fight in Las Vegas live for free.
Good news for Davao fans since a Davao boxer is also seeing action in a super flyweight clash scheduled for 10 rounds.
Gabi will fight young Mexican sensation Abner Mares, an ex-Olympian who has an impressive ring record of 15-0 with 9 KOs.
But Gabi is unfazed.
"Its just me and him on the ring, so I have a fifty-fifty chance," Gabi was quoted by Philboxing, com as saying on his tough assignment.
Gabi, who once fought in a world-title match, is on a roll. He won his last three fights, the last one during the Boxing World Cup Philippines vs Mexico in July where the Filipino boxers stamped their class over their rivals.
Gabi, managed by Freddie Roach, has a fight slate of 30-3 with 21 KOs.
