Donaires not keen on fighting Pinoy boxers
After winning his recent rematch bout against Brazilian Jose Albuquerque in a bloody eight-round unanimous decision, Glenn “The Filipino Bomber” Donaire will be fighting International Boxing Federation light flyweight champion Ulises Solis in a promised title shot given by Cameron Dunkin but will not fight his fellow countryman Juanito Rubillar if ever Rubillar wins the IBF title from the Mexican.
“We don’t want to fight Rubillar should he win. We are prepared to fight anybody other than our countrymen,” said Nonito Donaire Sr., father and trainer of the Donaire siblings, in a report posted at philboxing.com.
Main event
The veteran Rubillar will be challenging the 26-year-old Solis in a co-main event alongside the second title defense of IBF and International Boxing Organization flyweight title holder Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire, Glenn’s younger brother, against Australian Hussein “Hussy” Hussein in the Aviation Area in Dubai on April 18.
Meanwhile, Nonito is planning to move up to the super flyweight division if the other two flyweight champions, World Boxing Association flyweight kingpin Takefumi Sakata and World Boxing Council titlist Daisuke Naito will not accept his unification challenge and is not keen on fighting fellow Filipino Z “The Dream” Gorres, who is one of the top boxers of the super flyweight category.
Meanwhile Glenn, formerly a flyweight who moved down to the light flyweight category, didn’t find it difficult in his new weight and even felt stronger after fighting and defeating Albuquerque last Feb. 22 at the Silver Legacy Resort and Casino in Reno, Nevada. (EKA)
