Mexico riveted on Marquez fight

by Nick GIONGCO

The whole of Mexico is throwing its full support behind Juan Manuel Marquez, who faces the daunting task of putting an end to Manny Pacquiao’s giant-killing ways on March 15.

Ramiro Gonzalez, Golden Boy Promotions (GBP) publicity chief, said yesterday that Marquez’s daily workouts at the Romanza Gym in Mexico City are being closely monitored by the Mexican media "just like what the Philippine media is doing to Pacquiao."

Even retired Mexican legends like Daniel Zaragoza and Humberto Gonzalez, who both trained at the Romanza Gym during their fighting years, are giving their 100 percent support to the 34-year-old Marquez in his second defense of the World Boxing Council super-featherweight crown at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas.

"Zaragoza and Gonzalez have expressed their desire to travel to Las Vegas to cheer for Marquez," said the well-liked PR man, who handles the media relations for the Oscar De La Hoya-owned company.

A few days ago, Marquez conducted a media workout and those in attendance were impressed with what they saw, according to Gonzalez, who describes the Mexican champion as very determined to win.

"Juan Manuel is also very professional (when it comes to his training) and he doesn’t have vices. He is straight," added Gonzalez.

Over the years, Pacquiao has feasted on the very best Mexico could offer, including Erik Morales and Marco Antonio Barrera.

Marquez is one of a bevy of Mexicans who have challenged Pacquiao — and except for him — all wound up aching from head to foot after dealing with the Filipino puncher.

Pacquiao’s other Mexican knockout victims are Gabriel Mira, Emmanuel Lucero, Hector Velazquez and Jorge Solis.
